ALG. 2 INSTRUCTIONS FOR 9/27/01
Today's assignment: p. 233 #129 ODD and 3345 ODD. Also p. 235 127 ODD
This assignment will again use the ZERO PRODUCT PROPERTY:
If ab = 0, then a = 0 or b = 0.
This time you will need to FACTOR to solve the equations.
EXAMPLES
p. 233 #2
y^{2}  4y  45 = 0
(y  9) (y + 5) = 0
y  9 = 0 or y + 5 = 0
y = 9 or y =  5

t^{2} + 9t = 0
t (t + 9) = 0
t = 0 or t + 9 = 0
t = 0 or t =  9

For this type, you will need to write the equation in standard form. Standard form has all terms on one side, set equal to 0.
a^{2} + 3a = 40 subtract 40 from both sides.
a^{2} + 3a  40 = 0 standard form
(a + 8) (a  5) = 0
a + 8 = 0 or a  5 = 0
a =  8 or a = 5

2x^{2}  15x =  7
2x^{2}  15x + 7 = 0
(2x  1) (x  7) = 0
2x  1 = 0 or x  7 = 0
2x = 1 or x = 7
x = 1/2 or x = 7

About the quiz on Monday and Tuesday (10/1 and 10/2)
1) Be able to solve simple equations:
EXAMPLES
3x  4 = 8
5(x + 2) = 20
1/6 + 1/2 x = 5/6
0.6(2x + 4) = 8  (x + 5)
Don't forget the ZERO PRODUCT PROPERTY
(x  7)(x + 5) = 0
x  7 = 0 or x + 5 = 0
x = 7 or x = 5
2) Also remember to work on word problems (Sections 1.6 and 2.2)
 consecutive integer problems
 money / percent problems
 to get full credit on the quiz, you must:
 Identify your variable (Let x = ...)
 Solve by using an equation.
3) There will be 11 equations to solve and 4 word problems.
