**EXPONENT PROPERTIES:**

base^{exponent}

In the following properties,

the **bases** (a and b) are from the set of NONZERO INTEGERS. The **exponents** (m, n and p) are from the set of INTEGERS. (By the end of Algebra 2, we will allow exponents from the set of RATIONAL NUMBERS)

1) PRODUCT OF POWERS: a^{m }* a^{n }= a^{m + n}

2) POWER OF A POWER: ( a^{m })^{n }= a^{mn}

3) QUOTIENT OF POWERS: a^{m }/ a^{n }= a^{m - n}

4) POWER OF A PRODUCT: ( a^{m }b^{n })^{p }= a^{mp }b^{np}

5) POWER OF A QUOTIENT: ( a^{m }/ b^{n })^{p }= a^{mp }/ b^{np}

6) ZERO EXPONENT: a^{0 }= 1

7) NEGATIVE EXPONENT: a^{-n }= 1 /^{ }a^{n}
