MR. TOWNSLEY'S
MATH DEPARTMENT

EXPONENT PROPERTIES:

baseexponent

In the following properties,

the bases (a and b) are from the set of NONZERO INTEGERS. The exponents (m, n and p) are from the set of INTEGERS. (By the end of Algebra 2, we will allow exponents from the set of RATIONAL NUMBERS)

1) PRODUCT OF POWERS: am * an = am + n

2) POWER OF A POWER: ( am )n = amn

3) QUOTIENT OF POWERS: am / an = am - n

4) POWER OF A PRODUCT: ( am bn )p = amp bnp

5) POWER OF A QUOTIENT: ( am / bn )p = amp / bnp

6) ZERO EXPONENT: a0 = 1

7) NEGATIVE EXPONENT: a-n = 1 / an
